Maha Navami is also celebrated as the victory of good over evil. It is believed that on this day Goddess Durga took the form of Mahisasur Mardini to destroy Mahishaura, the demon who was terrorizing the universe.

On the Ashtami Tithi of Navratri, Hindu devotees worship Maa Mahagauri Devi. The day is also known as Maha Ashtami. The term Gauri signifies that she is the daughter of Giri or mountain. She rides on a bull holding a trident in her hands along with a damaru. She wears white clothes and her face is resplendent like that of a cool moon.
