Though astrology was born in India, many Indians, and even astrologers, have many misconceptions about several astrological facts. One of the biggest misconceptions and fears in Hindu society with respect to marriage is the presence of Manglik Dosha or Kuja Dosha in the chart of a boys or a girls. A countless number of good matches are being rejected by people just because the boy or the girl has Mangliks Dosha present in the chart.

Myths Around Mangal Dosha

  1. A girl having Mangala Dosha is considered a major taboo in many parts of India.
  2. The planet Mars symbolizes courage, aggression, vitality, confidence, fighting spirit, and warrior qualities.
  3. If Mars is placed in any of these five houses, it gives confidence and aggressive tendencies to the person.
  4. In certain cases, if Mars is malefic to the native, it also creates a danger to life, provided that other bad combinations are also present. These two are the main negative qualities.
  5. Hence the main reason for the “Dosha Complex” in the case of a woman is that – in the olden days, the ideal wife was regarded as one who was meek, obedient, and submissive. What Is Mangal Dosha?

  1. Rishi Parashara, in his ”Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra,” chapter 80, verse 47, said the following: “If Mars is placed in the Lagna, 12th, 4th, 7th, and 8th houses, without any aspect or conjunction of the benefic planets, the husband of such a woman will certainly have an early death.”
  2. So it is clear that if Mars has the aspect or association of a benefic, there is no Dosha. Hence if Mars is with benefics like Jupiter or Venus or aspected by any one of them, the Dosha is not there.
  3. Again as per the principles of Parasara, a planet in its own house or exaltation house only gives good results and nothing bad. So if Mars is in Aries, Scorpio, or Capricorn, then there is no Dosha.
  4. It must be noted that in the next two verses, verses 48 and 49, he gave the other important exception as follows: “The yoga in which a woman takes birth and becomes a widow, if a male takes birth, he also becomes a widower. If a woman with “the widowhood” yoga marries a man with similar yoga, such yoga will be canceled.”
  5. So the 2nd exception given by him is that this feared Dosha is canceled if both the girl and the boy have Mangal Dosha.
  6. Vaidyanath Dikshitar’s Jataka Parijata includes the 2nd house also in the Mangala Dosha. But he was a 15th-century astrologer and not a Rishi like Parasara. Hence the majority of traditional astrologers follow Parasara’s ideas on Mangala Dosha.

Significance of Mangal Dosha

However, Manglik Dosha is not something that can be ignored. It does cause marital discord. Before marriage, it is essential to match horoscopes for Kuja Dosha. If a person has Kuja Dosha in the horoscope, the spouse must also have Kuja Dosha. This way, the Dosha is canceled. Otherwise, both should be without any Dosha.

Various “authorities and experts” have given a lot of exceptions and cancelations for the Dosha. They are so many that almost everything is canceled! The truth is that in the majority of the cases, the so-called exceptions and cancellations do not work. So, we must follow Rishi Parasara’s principles.

Apart from Manglik Dosha, a horoscope may have many other doshas with respect to marriage. Any affliction to the lord of the seventh house of marriage or any malefic planet in the seventh house and any afflictions to Kalatara Karaka Venus can cause severe disruptions to one’s marriage. The matching of horoscopes and especially determining the extent of Mangala Dosha is the job of an experienced astrologer and must be done after carefully analyzing both the horoscopes and both Navamsa charts.
