Who or what is a Manglik?

Manglik is a person born under the influence of Mars (Mangala) as per Hindu astrology and is said to have “mangala dosha” (“mars defect”). As per marriage astrology, being a manglik is considered inauspicious. As per superstition, a marriage between a Manglik and a non-Manglik is often disastrous.

The planet Mars is usually aggressive in nature. The presence of Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a person’s birth chart results in them being Manglik or having Mangal dosha / Kuja Dosha.

  1. There is a belief that Mars in the first house leads to physical conflicts between the spouses.
  2. Mars in the 2nd and the 4th house brings troubles in family life, professional life and financial life of a person, respectively.
  3. Mars in the 7th house makes a person very irritable and short tempered.
  4. Mars in the 8th house means the person will be very lazy and careless.
  5. Mars in the 12th house will ensure the person have many enemies, mental problems leading to financial losses.

Though it seems all negative, these so-called ill effects of Mars can be pacified, if the horoscope of the opposite spouse counter balances it.

In marriage astrology, Manglik is looked down, more as a bane than a boon. These below mentioned factors need to be considered.

  1. Manglik just means presence of Mars in sensitive/ inauspicious sectors of a horoscope
  2. Marital happiness depends on strength of Venus & 7th house lord
  3. A weak Mars in sensitive/inauspicious sectors of horoscope may have a negative bearing on one’s marital life
  4. Gun-Milan & Mangal Dosha may have little to do with marital unhappiness, if other factors like dasa matching, health & longevity check of the partners are positive.

Mars is a powerful and potent planet representing action, sexual energy and enthusiasm. Then why blame Mars, such a mighty planet? Why Mangal Dosha is feared so much?

  1. A stable marriage depends on several factors like health and longevity of partners, mutual understanding, sexual compatibility, financial stability, and progeny possibilities.
  2. But the most important is the attribute is patience. This is what keeps a relationship stable more than anything else does.
  3. Mars is the significator of aggression and violence.
  4. Without a positive Mars, a native can have a lack of sexual passion or have too much of it.
  5. It is also the karaka of accidents and death.

There are certain combinations and placements of planets in a chart that can nullify the Mangal Dosha entirely. When assessing the chart for the presence of Mangal dosha, the possibility of the following combinations should not be ignored. Having any of these placements in the chart cancels out your Mangal Dosha. Have a look and see if you find the same in your natal chart.

Myth regarding Manglik Dosh:

Now coming to the question whether a Manglik can marry a Non-Manglik, there are certain things that can help determine the answer depending upon the individual case.

  1. Presence of Mars in 7th or 8th house is considered the most unfavorable for marital bliss.
  2. And if any one or more planets such as Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or Sun also conjunct with Mars, the combination becomes more severe and can result in loss of spouse, separation and/or friction in marriage.
  3. On a positive note, this means that if Mars occupies 1st, 2nd, 4th or 12th house, the dosha is not as harmful.
  4. Even if Mangal Dosha is present in 7th or 8th house, there are Vedic remedies that can dilute the effect.

Moreover, Mangal dosha is calculated from three points – natal Moon, ascendant and Venus.

  1. You will be a Manglik if Mars is placed in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from ascendant, Moon or Venus in your chart.
  2. The most severe Mangal dosha forms from ascendant, followed by Moon and then Venus.
  3. If one of you is Manglik from ascendant and the other from Venus, the dosha will not be as intense.

Kumbh Vivah is a common practice used to mollify the effect of Mangal Dosha. In this, the Manglik person is married to a banana tree, holy fig tree, or a silver/golden idol of Lord Vishnu, which absorbs the negative vibrations of Mars, saving marriage and spouse from the trouble.

However, it is to be clarified that, there’s no scientific data available to confirm this. It is a good idea to consult a Vedic astrologer for choosing the most suitable remedy for Mangal Dosha.
